From Knightdale Boulevard to the terminal curb
Most drives start on Knightdale Boulevard, the US 64 Business corridor through town. From there the car joins I-540, the Northern Wake Expressway, and follows its long arc west across the north side of Raleigh. Near the airport it leaves the expressway and takes the airport roads in to the departures level of Terminal 1 or Terminal 2. The fastest route carries no toll.
Weekday mornings bring the heaviest traffic, when commuters head west along the same expressway, and late afternoons load it again in the other direction. That is why a departure from Knightdale gets the largest traffic allowance in the door-time table: 20 minutes on top of the measured drive.
